Kacey Musgraves — eight-time Grammy winner and genre-bender — returns with Middle of Nowhere, her most rootsy and unfiltered record yet. Written during her longest period of being single, the album is a dust-blown love letter to Texas, solitude, and self-discovery.
“I needed that period to really understand that I don’t need someone to be happy,” she says. The title came from a sign in her tiny hometown of Golden, TX (pop. under 300): “Golden, TX: somewhere in the middle of nowhere.” Its quiet self-deprecation sparked the whole album’s vision.
Leaning hard into western tropes — pedal steel, banjo, dancehall two-steps — while weaving in Mexican, Norteño, Zydeco and ’70s country influences, Musgraves explores liminal spaces, emotional avoidance, and the freedom of being alone. “Being alone is way less lonely than being in the wrong relationship.”
Standout moments include “Uncertain, Texas” with Willie Nelson (their third collaboration), “Horses & Divorces” with Miranda Lambert — a hatchet-burying collab years in the making — and “Coyote” featuring Gregory Alan Isakov. Billy Strings drops in on “Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy.”
Honest, fearless, and always ready to wink at life’s troubles — Middle of Nowhere is classically Kacey.
